Middle Earth Info on Harfoots:

Harfoots
Harfoots were the most common of the three branches of Hobbits. The Harfoots were the first Hobbits to cross the Misty Mountains into Eriador, doing so about the Third Age 1050.
The Harfoots were the most typical Hobbits. They were browner than the Stoors and Fallohides, and also smaller and shorter. They liked best high-lands and hillsides, and kept the habit of living underground longer than the other strains. The Harfoots were friendlier with Dwarves than other Hobbits.
