We're in the airport and convert some cash to NZ dollars. |

We were going to rent a car, but the rental places had nothing for us and
they convinced us that we don't have enough time to drive to Christchurch,
so we took a bus into the city and ended up at a hostel called "Auckland
Central Backpackers." It's a decent place, $20 NZ dollars a night.($12 and
some change US). |

|
The hostel is near a ferry on Waitemata Bay, so the first thing we decide
to do is take a ferry to Davenport Island.
|
|
|
|
In Davenport we climbed a big hill so we could see our surroundings.
|
|
|
|
The hill is a WWII monument, it has bunkers all around it.
|
|
|
|
From up here you get a good view of Rangitoto Island, a dormant volcano.
|
|
|
|
There are also some other strange stuff on this hill, like this statue.........
|
|
|
|
........and this old gnarly tree at the bottom of the hill.
|
|
|
|
We returned to the hostel to get a little sleep, we were exhausted from
the plane trip. Nighttime came and we decided to cruise up Queen St.(main
strip) and try to find an internet cafe or something to check e-mail
and hookup the laptop.

|
We found a great little place nearby. We continued walking around,
grabbed something to eat and decided to go back because we were once more
totally exhausted. We got back and boy was it noisy. The pubs and clubs
all around the hostels had their music or bands cranked up and people
were partying. There is also a bar in the hostel above us. We were so
tired we slept through most of it.
