February 17, 1998 Great Barrier Reeef - Day 2

We got up early for our first dive. We loaded up the dingy and headed out to Fairy Reef.

It was quite amazing, unfortunately I couldn't get any pictures, even the underwater camera will only go to about 15 feet and we were diving to 15 meters(about 45 feet). Tons of coral life and fish, there were so many different kinds I can't even begin to describe them all. This dive was an orientation dive to get familiar with the area. We exited and took a break before our second dive. While aboard I took some photos of the boat.

Back into the water for our second dive at Fairy Reef, this time without a dive master, so we were on our own! This time we swam along the side of a reef wall instead of over it. This dive we saw huge barracuda! Sid and I are certified divers and decided to get our advanced diver certificates on this trip. Dive 3 of the day was the start of the course. "Romance moved to a new reef called "Net Reef." We learned how to navigate with a compass underwater. It was getting late in the day and the sun was about to set, we hopped on the dingy to try and get some nice shots with "Romance" in the foreground.

We also got some shots of just the sunset.

Dive 4 of the day was a night dive, another dive required for the advanced diver course.

Once in the water there were tons of worm like thingys, the lights from the boats were attracting them, pretty nasty! There were big squid everywhere eating them! For the night dive we had to do the compass navigation again for the course. We were really exhausted from the 4 dives and tried to go to sleep but it was extremely hot and stuffy down below, so I tried to get some sleep above on the deck.
